Vellum-backed marbled boards with leather cover label. Quarto. 64pp with 5 folding illustrations. Facsimile printing of Palmieri's classic 1872 work on the eruptions at Mount Vesuvius. Palmieri was an Italian physicist and meteorologist who taught at the Royal Naval School at Naples. In 1848 he began working at the Vesuvius Observatory and became its director in 1854. He watched all the volcanic disturbances at the observatory and nearly lost his life during the 1872 eruption. There are 5 views of the mountain at the end of the book including one tinted one of the eruption itself. A handsomely printed book. A very good copy with light wear to the covers and some light soiling to the spine. The text is very good and clean. The first folding plate has a short closed tear at the left fold. Foreign postage extra on this oversize book. Seller Inventory # 9147
