About this Item
Random House Inc., New York, New York, U.S.A., 1967. Fine- in Very Good Dust Jacket. Book Club Edition of the First Edition. Copyright page states "First Printing", but (1) the rear board has a book club impress in lower right corner, (2) the text block lacks the red topstain of the true first printing and (3) the dust jacket lacks a price while referencing the Book of the Month Club. Otherwise, this volume is indistinguishable from the true first printing, having the same measurements in all three directions and using the same paper. The Text Block is off-white, tight, straight and square with deckled fore-edges, no markings of any kind, and some tanning of the leaf edges The Binding is bright black full cloth with no loss of color, all corners square and sharp, bright gilt author's signature to front board, and bright gilt title, etc., to spine. The Dust jacket is bright with no loss of color, intact with several tears discreetly closed from behind with archival (pH neutral) materials, and showing wear at spine and folds. See photos. 428 + ii pages. 5 3/4" x 8 1/2". Presented as first person narrative by Nathaniel "Nat" Turner who led a four day long slave rebellion in Virginia in 1831, this historical fiction novel won both the 1968 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the William Dean Howells Medal in 1970, while being a finalist for the National Book Award of 1968 for Fiction. Time Magazine included the novel in its 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005. Seller Inventory # 000295
