Illustrated in B&W with photos, maps, and drawings. Chapter titles: I. Strange Land of 'Volcanoes' and 'Shining Mountains' II. The Mystery of 'La Roche Jaune' or Yellow Rock River III. John Colter, The Phantom Explorer - 1807-1808 IV. 'Colter's Hell': A Case of Mistaken Identity V. 'Les Trois Tetons': The Golden Age of Discovery 1810-1824 VI. 'Jackson's Hole': Era of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, 1825-1832 VII. 'The Fire Hole': Era of the American Fur Company, 1833-1840 VIII. Epilogue: 1841-1870 Merrill J. Mattes (1910-1996) was a Regional Historian for the National Park Service. There is a library named after him in Independence, Missouri. Carefully read and stored softcover has square corners and single crease in spine. Interior is tight and unmarked, however circa p 25, there is a stain from drops of a liquid, which also stained bottom page-edge. Dried w/o damage. Always privately owned. Copyright 1962.
