Second editions, two volumes, large 8vo. 421 chromolithographs by Thorburn, Keulemans and others, with some mostly light foxing, marbled endpapers. Armorial bookplates of the photographer Peter Henry Emerson, with his pencilled signature to the title page in volume I. Contemporary green half calf, t.e.g., spines sunned and slightly rubbed. A condensation of the full work, with only the title page from volume I, the appendix and subscribers list bound in at the front, but complete with the full complement of plates. An important early photographer, Emerson (1856-1936) published a number of photographic essays on rural life in East Anglia, taking influence from impressionism to present images that aspired to be considered art, rejecting the convention at the time for retouching negatives.
