About this Item

Description:

The Coal Tar Colours or Farbwerke Vorm. Meister Lucius & Bruning Hoechst on Main Germany and Their Application in Wool Dyeing in Three Volumes, frontispieces, tipped in fabric swatches, thread samples, tartans, silks etc., 1910, 10.75 x 8 , 4to. In fair condition. Volume I is quite slanted, however binding remains intact. Textblocks are rippled and soiled from wear and use. Age-toning and fingersoiling throughout each volume. The glue used to affix fabric samples has also rippled/warped the leaves. Wool fabric samples remain super bright and clean, all are intact upon closer inspection. Some are slightly soiled from wear, but remain remarkably bright. Volume three spine is peeling with binding mesh exposed. All have moderate edge wear with typical scuffing and modest soiling. End papers remain clean. Volume II pages 121-128 are loose, but intact. All are free of known markings. These were well-loved and used likely by a factory or fabric warehouse in the Edwardian era. Please see photos. Incredibly scarce German and Swiss wool dyeing production manuals. To increase their market penetration against natural dyes, and to increase their relative market shares, between 1895-1910 each of the large German and Swiss producers of synthetic (coal-tar) dyestuffs published, for free issue to their existing and potential customers, expensively produced volumes describing their dyestuff ranges, how to use them and copious small fabric samples included. Includes how to produce synthetic indigo, which was quite difficult at the time. Perfect for a collector of rare textile books. Seller Inventory # RAREE1910DQRX
