Collection of letters. From the introduction: "Perry Mayo's experiences in Michigan's Second Volunteer Infantry form 1861 to 1864 were graphically preserved in letters to members of his family. His description of battles, marches, and camp life, coupled with Mayo's opinions on the political aspects of the war, reflect a personal insight of unusual depth. The letters, published for the first time, were written to family members in Calhoun County, Michigan. The correspondence begins with Mayo's first letter, written on June 5, 1861, from Detroit, one day before his regiment was transferred to Washington, D.C. From 1861, the letters continue until May 8, 1863, to March 11, 1864, when Mayo was recuperating from wounds." A publication of the Michigan State University Museum Cultural Series. Vol. 1 No. 3.
