Title: Circa 1840's LOVE TOKEN (Valentine)

Binding: Disbound

Book Condition: Very Good

Dust Jacket Condition: N/A

Scarce, attractive early Valentine. Of the type of the 1840's known as "love tokens." Probably American. Attractive embossed border on the cover and there is also an inner border surrounding the central image. The inner border embellished in soft hand applied colors, showing as vignettes a view of the pyramids of Egypt and also having two semi-clad maidens on pedestals at each side. The central mage in darker colors is of a young woman receiving advice on love from an old woman. The coloring quite expert. The underlying pattern was pre-printed in black and white. The inside pages and back cover are still blank. Printed on a rather thin stock of paper but it is a good quality stock and there is not chipping or other condition problem other than a bit of light creasing especially at upper right corner. Thre is a moderate sized foxing spot in the upper embossed border, and another spot of same size in the colored border. Neither brown age spot is terribly distracting. A very nicely preserved example on the whole. Wording printed at top and bottom of image reads: "Dear girl whilst listening to a lover's vows. Beware deceit -- save when a youth. Like me unfolds his heart to spouse. Thee in conjugal links of truth." The pyramids on the inner border are in light blue and the maidens on pedestals in shades of pink. The central image of young woman in dress of pink and white, old woman in dark blue dress with dark yellow shawl and white blouse. Interior scene in brown, yellow, pink and with dark blue curtains and dark green walls. Window in background through which can be seen a church spire shaded in light pink. Size: 8 By 10 Inches, 4pp. Bookseller Inventory # 2287
