About this Item
Best of 1929's Chatterbox magazine. Chatterbox was a British weekly paper for older children with both fact & fiction articles as well as puzzles and poems. Richly illustrated by multiple artists using B&W woodblocks & line drawings with a full color frontis and cover. American advertisement from the era in the end-papers. Cover has a full color illustration of an armed bedouin on a horse. 1st story titled "The Royal Handicp" by Frances Cowen. 316 pages. No Dust Jacket. John Erskine Clarke (1827?1920) was a British clergyman who established the first parish magazine. He established several other religious publications and was responsible for founding churches schools and hospitals in Battersea. In 1866 he set to work with publisher William Macintosh to produce Chatterbox, a weekly paper for older children. The first edition went on sale on 1 December 1866. At least by 1873, annual Chatterbox anthologies were produced and were continued at least through 1934, according to other books for sale at this date. Hardcover has full color illustrated paper board with a green cloth spine, but no DJ. Cover edges worn through to cardboard. Interior tightly bound and appears complete, but frontis picture torn out although still laid in. Text is unmarked, some pages dog-earred. Only foxing I noted was in end-pages, interior bright & clean. This copy always privately owned. No copyrights listed. No edition/print-run info found. Printed in Great Britain. No ISBN, LCCN nor MSR. Seller Inventory # 007582
