Book Description Boston Book and Art Shop, Inc, Boston, 1969. Hardcover. Book Condition: vg. First English language edition. Folio (12 3/4 x 10"). 179, pp. Original cream cloth, with black lettering to spine and front cover. Original lithographic frontispiece by Marc Chagall. This third volume of the six-volume catalogue raisonné of Chagall's lithographs covers a period spanning the years 1962 to 1968.It is richly illustrated throughout with an original lithographic frontispiece, as well as 184 color and b/w reproductions of Marc Chagall's lithographic work numbered 377 to 560 in the catalogue. "Chagall's emblematic irrationality shook off all outside influences: color governed his compositions, calling up chimerical processions of memory where reality and the imaginary are woven into a single legend, born in Vitebsk and dreamed in Paris" (Dictionary of Modern Art). For Chagall, the medium of lithography did not come easily. Printer Fernand Mourlot ran a lithography press where such greats as Braque, Matisse, Picasso, Miró and Chagall came to have their designs printed and to learn about this still nascent print-making process. "For many long months Chagall came and worked tirelessly, and his dissatisfaction allowed him to have only a few of his first attempts printed" (Sorlier, 45). The six volumes constituting the catalogue raisonné of Chagall's lithographs were issued separately over a period of 26 years. All volumes were published simultaneously in English and French.
