Calculus is the mathematics of change and motion. Where there is motion or growth, where forces are at work producing acceleration or decay, calculus is the right mathematical tool. One change in the 4th edition was the ability to obtain this title in two volumes as well as a single volume. The set for sale is the two volume presentation, labeled part 1 and part 2. This amounts to 78 pages of duplication. Part 1 has xi + 422pp + pp a1 to a84 + 4 end-pages with 1 common integrals, totaling 519 pages. Part 2 has xxii + pp 379-784, for 418 pages. George Brinton Thomas Jr. (1914?2006) was an American mathematician and professor of mathematics at MIT. Internationally, he is best known for being the author of this widely used calculus textbook Calculus and Analytical Geometry, known today as Thomas' Calculus. In 1951, Addison-Wesley was a new publishing company specializing in textbooks and technical literature. The management was unhappy with the calculus textbook they were then publishing, so they approached Thomas, asking if he could revise the book. Instead, he went ahead with an entirely new book. The first edition came out in 1952; Calculus and Analytic Geometry became one of the most famous and widely used texts on the subject. For many of the later editions (from the 5th onwards), Thomas was assisted by co-author Ross L. Finney, who died in 2000. By 2020, there have been 14 editions called Thomas' Calculus, revisions performed by modern mathematicians. This 4th edition was published before inexpensive hand calculators - when slide rules were still used - and written in the clear exposition style of George Thomas that many students kept for their own personal calculus reference. Both hardcovers share the same B&W designs and lettering on cloth boards and both have no dust jackets. Part 1 has tan cloth boards and part 2 has green cloth boards. Prior Owner's name and info printed on ffep, adds no value. Part 1 has been studied with underlining and highlighting in interior as well as dogearred pages and shelf wear from rougher usage. Part 2 has much less marking (only penciled notes noticed) with square corners and minor wear on cover. Copyrights 1968, 1960, 1953 & 1951. Stated 4th Edition. Printed in U.S.A.
