Title: CONTES ET NOUVELLES EN VERS (Tome 1)
Publisher: A Londres (no Publisher or Date shown), Circa 1770.
Publication Date: 1770
Binding: Full Calf
Illustrator: 31 Engraved Plates After Charles Eisen
Book Condition: Very Good
Although only volume I is present, it is illustrated by the very desirable engravings after the illustrations of Charles Dominique Eisen (1728-1778). These plates exhibit some of the most elaborate Rococo art to be found in books of the 18th century. Lavishly designed illustrations and some of them rather baudy. Not the typical neo-classicism often found in book illustration of the era. There is also a frontispiece portrait of La Fontaine and an engraved title page in addition to the 31 plates. No publisher or date shown on the title page. Title states "A Londres" but that is likely false and this book was probably published somewhere outside of France but on the continent of Europe. Probably in the Netherlands or even in Switzerland. Note in pencil on front blank endpaper states this book is circa 1770 and the look of the book is consistent with that date. Hard to find these fables of La Fontaine with the Eisen illustrations. A well worn but still presentable copy, the spine gilt embellished and with five raised bands. The spine very rubbed and the covers even more worn, but the title in gilt on spine still bright. Marbled endpapers. Pages mostly clean with light age toning. Ink splatter somewhat affecting text page of Le Mari Confesseur but the text in French still readable. A couple of other splatters and a bit of soiling noted. Each of the fables leading off with a full page plate. The plates are good, bold impressions and are mostly very clean except for a couple that had some not too serious small areas of browning from age. Not foxing per se. Bookseller Inventory # 1781
