William Shew [1820-1903] was born in Watertown, New York, and moved to New York City to study the daguerrotype process with Samuel F.B. Morse, known for inventing the telegraph and for his extensive work with the daguerreotype. He moved to Boston and began his own business, and then to California in the early 1850s, where he became one of the best-known photographers on the west coast. [CAMERA CRAFT, VOL. 5. NO. 3.
