Book Description Createspace Independent Publishing Platform, United States, 2013. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Uniquely Australian, and the first Australian bushcraft book to be published and gain a wide readership, The Bush Boy s Book was published in 1911 and was considered compulsory bushcraft reading until at least the 1940s for all bushmen, scouts, cadets, army recruits, farmer s sons and early outdoor enthusiasts of all types. This was the book our grandfathers and great grandfathers ravenously pored over by gas, kerosene or candle light, committing every little hint and tip to memory. Today, over 100 years after it was first published, this fine book has been all but forgotten. It s time to bring it to a new generation of bushcrafters, scouts and outdoor recreation devotees. In October 1911, the Perth Western Mail s Literary Editor had this to say about the book: The Bush Boy s Book, by Donald MacDonald, comprises 260 pages of excellently printed matter, which should prove invaluable to anyone, boy or man, who enjoys or wishes to know anything about life in the open. For Boy Scouts it will furnish a gold mine of information. The author has the trick of making his descriptions perfectly comprehensible. He would seem to have left nothing out - beds and bivouacs, camps, codes, camp cookery, fishing, game, guns, bushcraft, shooting, swimming, bush surgery, snakes, things worth knowing , traps and snares, tips and instruction on all manner of things that concern bushmen; how to extricate oneself when lost, how not to get lost at all, how to be happy though bushed, to make beds, meals and shelters, etc., etc. It is written for Australians, by Australians from an Australian point of view, and the letterpress is supplemented by diagrams that leave nothing to be misunderstood. Both the author and the publisher are to be congratulated on a praiseworthy work. Bookseller Inventory # APC9781484170304

Book Description Angus & Robertson, Sydney, 1930. Original Red Cloth Hardback. Book Condition: Good Plus. Fourth Edition. 1930. Fourth edition. [x], 329pp. and black and white drawings within the text. This is a hard-to-find and fascinating book that, although first published in 1911, should be of value and interest to anyone who wants to venture into the Australian bush. Donald Alaster Macdonald (c1859-1932) was a journalist and nature writer, born at Fitzroy, Melbourne. Sent by the 'Argus', he was the first Australian war correspondent at the South African War during which he was beseiged at Ladysmith. On his return from South Africa he established a weekly column in the 'Argus' called 'Nature Notes and Queries'. It was extended to 'Notes for Boys' in 1909 and suggested his next work, 'The Bush Boy's Book'. In this book he has gathered all the bushcraft that thousands of Australians had gathered in more than 100 years, and was to be seen as a sort of 'Bushamn's Bible' an devoted mainly to the open-air recreations of boys. It includes chapters on The Bush Boys' Camp; Camp Cookery; Out With the Gun; Australian Wild Game; River Fishing; Traps and Snares; Codes, Ciphers, and Signals; How to Find the Way; The Snake Trouble; Bush Surgery. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with black titling on the front board and spine. The case of the book is in good condition with shelf wear and some staining and soiling on the boards. The corners are lightly bumped and the spine ends are a bit more heavily bumped with a little damage to the cloth. The spine is faded. The contents are tight and clean with browning and some foxing and soiling on the endpapers. There is an inscription on the front fixed endpaper that reads "Ormond Uren - Ackworth School" that indicate that this copy was probably owned by Ormond Uren (c1919-2015) who was born in Boulder, Western Australia, and at the age of 11 was sent to board at Ackworth, a Quaker school in Yorkshire. Finally the family settled in Edinburgh, where Ormond attended George Watson’s academy and then Edinburgh University, studying French and Spanish. Uren achieved brief notoriety when, in 1981, he was alleged by Nigel West to be a member of the infamous Soviet spy ring that included Kim Philby, Guy Burgess, Donald Maclean and their recruiter, Anthony Blunt. Size: 6.9" Tall. Bookseller Inventory # Australia016
