About the Book

Bibliographic Details

Title: Boy Scouts of America. A Handbook of ...

Publisher: Published for the Boy Scouts of America by Doubleday, Page & Company, New York

Publication Date: 1910

Binding: Hardcover

Edition: First edition.

Octavo. original mustard coloured cloth pictorially stamped and lettered in darker brown. Illustrated. The variant with only Seton's name as author on front cover and title page. Scarce. Much of Seton's own contributions to the 'Original Edition' Official Handbook are taken from the various articles that he had published previously in several American magazines, like The Ladies' Home Journal and Country Life. So, this book is an obvious hybrid of Seton's published writings on Scouting as well as literature from Baden-Powell's fully operational English Scouting Movement at the time.In fact, in today's parlance, one could even look at Seton's Handbook as a 'Xeroxed' publication, since there is a limited portion of truly original material that had not been previously published. There is, however, a definite attempt to distinguish this Handbook from its English counterpart, with its opening lesson on the American flag, rather than on the "Cadets of Mafeking". This attempt is still somewhat suspect since the front cover of this Handbook is Baden-Powell's cover drawing from Part Five of Scouting for Boys, albeit the British 'Union Jack' in exchange for 'Old Glory'. [Scott, David C. (2006). "The Origins of BSA's 1910 Handbook". International Scouting Collectors Association Journal (ISCA Journal) 6 (4): 6Ð13]. Covers and edges a little dust soiled and rubbed, front hinge cracked, pp.33-34 excised and lacking, half-title loose but present, rubber stamping on front pastedown. Bookseller Inventory # 29012
