Octavo. orange brown morocco over marbled boards, spine with raised bands and lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Original paper wrappers bound in. With a lengthy inscription in French by the author: "Pour Madame F. Singer, / hommage de l'auteur, / [signed] Miguel Zamacois / mai 1935 / Jacanne. / Le mot pour le bouffon, ce'est pour le preux (?) l'estoc / l'aiguillon pour l'abiller et l'ergot pour le coq! / (acte 2) M.Z.". The play was first performed on 20 January, 1907 at the Sarah-Bernhardt Theatre in Paris. Miguel Zamacois (1866 - 1939) was a French journalist, author, poet and librettist. He wrote several operas besides about a dozen plays, including "The Jesters" (Les Bouffons). The play takes place in 16th century France, where a nobleman, Chicot, disguised as a jester with a hump want to demonstrate that it is with, not beauty, which is needd to gain a girl's love. With a lengthy inscription in French by the author: "Pour Madame F. Singer, / hommage de l'auteur, / [signed] Miguel Zamacois / mai 1935 / Jacanne. / Le mot pour le bouffon, ce'est pour le preux (?) l'estoc / l'aiguillon pour l'abiller et l'ergot pour le coq! / (acte 2) M.Z.".
