In good condition. Nicely preserved texts with minimal shelf wear. Typically scuffed corners, edges. Six raised bands are lightly rubbed. Gilt work remains bright and clear. Interiors are free of ownership. Interiors are evenly toned with sporadic moderate foxing. Light offsetting from plates. Tissue guards are intact. Printed on mounted India paper. Bindings tight. A fine set. Please see photos. Comprising specimens of architecture and sculpture, and other vestiges of former ages, accompanied by descriptions. Most of the plates are by Like Clennell (1781-1840), Northumberland-born wood-engraver and painter, one of Bewick s pupils. Leather. Condition: Good. None (illustrator). A beautifully bound pair of volumes on The Border Antiquities of England and Scotland. Complete in two volumes. Together with illustrations of remarkable incidents in border history and tradition, and original poetry by Walter Scott. Volume I contains 47 black and white plates and Volume II contains 45 plates. Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet, FRSE (15 August 1771 21 September 1832) was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright, and poet. Scott was the first English-language author to have a truly international career in his lifetime, with many contemporary readers in Europe, Australia, and North America. His novels and poetry are still read, and many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and of Scottish literature. In red morocco leather bindings with gilt embellishment to the spines and boards. Externally, a trifle rubbed. There is some minor loss to the leather. Joints are starting but still reasonably firm. Rear board on volume II is held by cords only. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with some scattered light foxing. Good. book. Seller Inventory # LTH1-A-6

Armorial bookplate in both volumes of Scottish industrialist Sir Charles Tennant (1823 - 1906). Added illustrated engraved title pages on India paper, frontispieces & plates, printed on mounted India paper, engraved By John Greig after Luke Clennell, George Arnald, Alexander Nasmyth, John Renton & Henry Webber. Walter Scott wrote the introduction(p. [iii]-cxxvii in v.1) references to him in the text show that the text was by other writers. Full light brown morocco ('russia'), lettered gilt on spine and decorated gilt on front cover with gilt lining on turn-ins. All edges gilt. Slight rubbing. First edition. Two volumes. Rare large paper copies edges uncut. Original marbled papered boards light rubbing spine rebacked with title to spines. Plates are offset to facing text pages but the plates are fine and fresh. Content clean with large margins. An excellent copy. Measures at 16.5 x 12 inches each volume. 95 full page engravings on India paper. Though the front cover lists 98 engravings we believe it to be error and the book stands complete.RIBA catalog matches with 95 plates. With original poetry by Sir Walter Scott. Text page 183/84 of vol. 2 has a large corner torn away at bottom no affect to text else the book is excellent. A scarce copy.
