Brady and N. Tate - OXFORD : 1851. **LORD WHARTON TRUSTEES GIFT : 1852. FULL-LEATHER WITH CLASPS**Hardback. Brown full calf leather binding with 'The Gift of Philip Late Lord Wharton distributed by his Lordship's Trustees 1852' within a lighter brown panel to cover. Brass Clasps. All edges inked in red. A tight, bright and clean copy. To fly-leaf is inscription; 'Mary Slee, Aged 6 years, 1852. Lord Wharton founded his Bible Charity in 1696, In his will he left land near York to support a Bible charity, which was devoted to the distribution of bibles to children for use outside of the church or school. The terms of the will require the recipient to learn by rote the 1st, 15th, 25th, 37th, 101st, 113th, 145th psalms. The will also requires the Shorter Catechism also be included. Many thousands of Bibles have been distributed and the Trust still distributes Bibles to under eighteen year-olds. Philip Wharton, 4th Baron Wharton born in 1613, was an English peer. A Parliamentarian during the English Civil War, he served in various offices including soldier, politician and diplomat. He was appointed as the Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire by Parliament in July 1642. He was a Puritan and a favourite of Oliver Cromwell, which is why, from 1660 onwards he often ran into difficulty with the Crown. In 1676 he was imprisoned in the Tower of London and later (in 1685) fled the country when King James II came to the throne. He died 4 February 1696. VERY GOOD INDEED. Uniformly bound in full purple morocco, the sides with gilt rules, floral sprays to corners, and central gilt device, the spines with raised bands and richly-gilt in compartments, inner dentelles gilt, yellow-coated endpapers, purple silk page markers, all edges gilt. The pair housed in a contemporary box of matching purple morocco. Sepia-tinted illustration of Christ bearing the cross pasted onto front pastedown of the Book of Common Prayer. Quarto. Unpaginated. Contemporary Cambridge style blind panelled calf. Rubbed but sound, with an old reback tooled in blind between the raised bands. Front joint beginning to crack and some wear to the foot of the spine. Internally clean and tight. Herbert 917. The last quarto edition printed before Baskett acquired the patent. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 8 volumes, 6.25 inches - 13.5 inches tall. A magnificent and unique collection of devotional works belonging to Nicholas Robinson, Lord Mayor of Liverpool in 1828-1829. On his becoming the Bailiff of Liverpool in 1818 he had the 4 great devotional works bound in uniform full black morocco with gilt raised bands, superb gilt tooling to the panel and boards, dentelles and all edges. On becoming Lord Mayor he had another set of the 4 works bound in even more sumptuous uniform full red morocco. These have gilt raised bands, extra gilt panels, glorious gilt flourishes to the boards, gilt dentelles and all edges. These volumes also have watered silk doublures and free endpapers. All 8 volumes have his autographed armorial bookplates and his gilt embossed inscriptions on the upper boards. There is minor rubbing and scuffing, otherwise all the volumes are in superb condition.
