About this Item
Fine in original wraps. First and only edition. Light yellow cardboard wraps with photo of Bix in darker yellow plus lettering in brown on front cover, no printing on spine. This is apparently a labor of love written by collectors of Bix Beiderbecke records dating from 1924 through 1972, many of the recordings as 78 RPM but with later LP's and some other items as well. The text was typed on a typewriter and then apparently reduced and copied, but it is elaborately laid out to document all his records as well as the recording sessions and many of the soloists including Benny Goodman, Bing Crosby, Red Nichols and Jack Teagarden. Among Bix's accomplishments was that he was trumpet soloist with Paul Whiteman for many years. Also of note was that he attended (and was 'expulsed' from) Lake Forest Academy. A notable figure in the American jazz scene who played at the peak of the big band era, this book notes not only all of the early Paul Whiteman, Hoagy Carchichael, Frankie Trumbauer, Chicago Loopers, Jean Goldkette, the Wolverine Orchestra and all other orchestras he played with and soloed with prior to his early 1931 death, but all of the subsequent re-releases that continued until this book's date of publication. This is an absolutely amazing and comprehensive review of one of the greats of the American jazz age with a full documentation of the records on which his work is preserved. Beiderbecke was the original 'Young Man with a Horn' as fictionalized by Dorothy Baker, an early superstar of the jazz age who tragically died of alcohol abuse at age 28.
