About this Item
An early internal guide for the governance of Bedouin tribes in Syria and the Lebanon. Dated Palmyra, 25 June 1922, this was issued prior to formal ratification of the French Mandate. Original printed paper covered boards with olive green cloth spine 15x22cm. (5)pp prelims, 90, (8)pp including several errata pages + (5)pp facsimiles + 4 colour folding maps + 1 b/w folding drawing. Covers very good, interiors near fine, lightly tanned, with previous owner's faint ms details to the front pastedown (Sergeant Herbert Rene). Captain Raoul Raynaud was an intelligence officer responsible for controlling the Bedouin, and Martinet a doctor responsible for providing medical support to them. They prepared this to inform senior political and medical officials in the areas they advised. It is thus addressed to Lieutenant-Colonel Delegate of the High Commission to the Governments of Damascus and Djebel Druze, and the Senior Doctor 1st Class, Advisor in Hygiene and Public Support in Damascus): "L'idee nous en vint au cours de ces longues promenades ou l'on est balance au pas du chameau deambulant par les solitudes". The report includes a study of the tribes (their history, camel tribes, sheep herding tribes, tribes of the Djebel, sedentary tribes etc); terrain; Bedouin customs (individuals, the camp, the tribe); the future of nomads (history, Wahabbism, the Arab State, settlement). Attention is paid to Wahabbism because of the contemporary conquests of Ibn Saud, and includes a discussion of its origins. The authors recommend that the nomadic tribes be settled and encouraged to pursue agriculture. This would be through benevolent authority, but any breach must be suppressed immediately. The facsimiles include a letter from General Gouraud, and tribal genealogical tables. There is a folding sketch of a Bedouin tent. Maps show migratory routes and tribal locations.
