About this Item
21 x 16.5 cm. Octavo. 8pp, preceded and followed by blank leaves. Bound in 3/4 leather, gilt spine lettering. Some rubbing ot hte leather. Facsimile reproduction of an account of the battle of Flodden, probably the first newsbook to be printed in Britain, which was originally published around 1514. The woodcut was reproduced from the original document and the text was reset line for line with punctuation and spelling reproduced. Printer Joseph Smeeton (active c 1794-1808) and later his son G. Smeeton, produced these close typographical imitations of early English books to fulfill the demands of the growing rare book market. Source: McKitterick - Old Books, New Technoloiges.
