About this title

Written in a style accessible to discerning fans, Scully's The Business of Major League Baseball identifies the many economic pressures exerted on the game today and measures their effects both on the field and in the ticket office. Illustrated.

From Library Journal:

Business management professor Scully dissects big league baseball--its rules, player contracts, franchises, and tax accounting. Scully comments strongly on free agency, profitability, team performance, and racial discrimination. He concludes that blacks are mostly outfielders; Earl Weaver was the most effective manager; and teams are more profitable than is generally admitted. This is more detailed and baseball oriented than Joseph Durso's The All-American Dollar (LJ 3/1/72. o.p.) and John Underwood's Spoiled Sport ( LJ 11/15/84. o.p.), but heavy use of mathematics and statistical analysis make it more suitable for academic and research collections than for popular reading ones.
