Vilhjalmur Stefansson (1879-1962) was a Canadian Arctic explorer and ethnologist. In the early years of the twentieth century, he was among the first to live among the Inuit and study the lives and culture. He also participated in several expeditions to the Northern Polar Regions. His papers, and those of his associates, help form the basis of the Polar Studies Collection at Dartmouth College. The United States issued a commemorative stamp honoring him in 1986.
