FIRST EDITION. 12mo. iv + 183 + [1] pp. + [8] pp] publisher's advertisements. Bound in original mottled calf, gilt; spine in compartments, decorated gilt, with contrasting morocco title label. Extremities worn, with a little loss at tail of spine. Title page browned with small tears below author's name, with slight loss of text. Occasional foxing elsewhere, but otherwise a very good copy. Early signature on first free endpaper and 1937 gift inscription with verse on front pastedown. Illustrated by engraved frontispiece, dated December 1815. First edition of a popular children's moral story by Sheffield born poet and educationalist, Mrs Barbara Hofland (1770-1844), which was published in numerous later editions.
