TWO VOLUMES BOUND AS ONE. 12mo. 3.25 x 5 inches. Tome Premier, [viii] + 276 pp.; Tome Second, [viii] + 200 pp. Title pages in red and black. Front board bound in original calf; spine rebacked with rear board also replaced, in compartments, decorated gilt, with gilt titles. A little age related wear, but otherwise a very good crisp copy. 1801 signaure on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 3 engraved plates, including frontispiece. Decorated by title page vignette, head and tailpiece vignettes and by initials. Early 1740 Amsterdam edition of a novel first published in Paris, 1736-38. Alain Rene Le Sage (1668-1747) was a French playwright and novelist, who followed his translations from the Spanish with original plays and novels, several, including this title, being set in Spain, the best known being the picaresque novel, Gil Blas, published 1715-35. Le Bachelier was later translated into English and Spanish. The work is divided into three books, spread across two volumes, here bound as one. FICTION NOVELS LIT.
