Description:

PRESENTLY DISCOUNTED. WAS $1,370. A Very Good ORIGINAL AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY NOBELIST BJORNSTJERNE BJORNSON dated November 2, 1884 and written on a single sheet of paper measuring approximately 8 3/4 inches across and 7 1/8 inches high, having a vertical center fold to create four smaller pages. Having split at least in part along the center fold, the letter has been neatly repaired. While the letter does not name a specific addressee, we speculate that it was written to Louis von Saville, playwright at the Wallner Theater in Berlin. In the letter, Bjornson, in thrilled tone, extolls the skill of his son Bjørn Bjørnson -- a stage actor and theater director -- referring to a production of Shakespeare's Richard the Third at the Christiana Theater, then considered Norway's finest stage theater and of which his son was to become the artistic leader in the next year -- from which position he went on to become the first theatre director at Norway's National Theatre. He described his son as the hero of the day, stating that his Richard the Third had taken the audience by storm and that his talent surprised everyone, including Bjornson. Bjornson goes on to criticize the translator Lange, describing him as a rouge and liar. Considered (with Henrik Ibsen, Jonas Lie, and Alexander Kielland) to be one of the four greatest Norwegian writers, Bjornstjerne Bjornson won the 1903 Nobel Prize in Literature "as a tribute to his noble, magnificent and versatile poetry, which has always been distinguished by both the freshness of its inspiration and the rare purity of its spirit", making him the the first Norwegian win the Prize. (Bjornson - the father and Nobelist - also is celebrated for writing the lyrics to Norway's National Anthem. We seldom see letters of this length from Bjornson.
