This 8 x 10 original NASA black & white photograph shows astronaut Wally Schirra in civilian clothes and is Signed, "Best Wishes, Walter M. Schirra" with the Mercury 7 logo added. The image is in Near Fine condition with two edge nicks that do not affect the image. Together with a typed letter on Project Mercury stationary referencing the recipient's request for a photograph and is signed, "Walter M. Schirra" Commander, U.S. Navy, Mercury Astronaut.Walter M. "Wally" Schirra (1923-2007) was an original Project Mercury astronaut who on October 3, 1962, aboard Sigma 7, orbited the Earth six times in nine hours and 30 minutes making him the fifth American in space. He was also a flight member aboard Gemini 6 with Thomas Stafford (December 15-16 1965) when it rendezvoused with Gemini 7. Schirra also commanded the first manned Apollo mission-Apollo 7-on October 11-22 1968 with Walt Cunningham and Donn Eisele making him the only astronaut to have participated in all three of NASA's space programs.
