This treaty, which concluded the first Anglo-Dutch War, is notable because it was one of the first to implement international arbitration as a method of conflict resolution. A secret clause in this treaty that obliged the States of Holland to enact the Act of Seclusion, which excluded William III, Prince of Orange, from the office of Stadtholder, played an important role in Dutch domestic politics during the first Stadtholderless Period, an era that marked the high point of the Dutch Republic's golden age.
