Binding a little loose. Spine leather worn and deteriorating. 3" split to leather at top of front joint. 5" split to leather at top of rear joint. 1/2" chips to leather at head of spine. Hinges broken. Two plates and two text leaves detached and loose. Plates clean, minor foxing. Light 1/2" dampstain to lower corner of some leaves. Tissue guards present to all plates.; Volume I (all published). "Authors' Edition". First one volume edition (the work had previously been published in 1887-8 in three separate parts). Subtitled: "being a systematic and popular description of the native flowering plants of New Zealand and the adjacent islands". xviii,180 pages. Full maroon morocco binding with gilt and black decoration to spine. Gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. Page dimensions: 292 x 238mm. With 40 attractive chromolithographs (including frontispiece), printed in New Zealand. List of subscribers to the "Authors' Edition" on pp. 179-180. Bagnall records that the prospectus for this work advertised the availability of copies bound in cloth, full calf, or morocco. This is one of the morocco bindings. A further two volumes were planned but never published. A "definitive work calculated to debunk the widely held belief that '. there are no flowers in New Zealand'." - Dawson, page 67. "[T]his enormously expensive project pretty well bankrupted the original printers, William Bock and Alfred Cousins - their partnership was dissolved soon after the publication of the 'Album'." - Dawson, page 74.
