About this Item
John O'Connell (1810-1858) was the son of Irish Nationalist leader Daniel O'Connell. He followed his father as a member of parliament and leader of the Repeal Association. Although lacking his father's charisma and flair for public oratory, he had a reputation for hard work and a strong grasp of economic argument and financial detail. His position in Irish history has suffered from the prominence of his father's reputation and the historical legacy of 'Young Ireland' movement, with which he had a fractious relationship.
