The dustjacket claims this volume is the "first book to supply the English reader with a comprehensive view of the apocryphal literature connected with the New Testament." Though English translations were made by William Wake and by Jeremiah Jones in the early eighteenth century, with other translations to follow, James translations were the first scholarly translations of the twentieth century. Though most renowned as a writer of ghost stories, James was a substantial medieval scholar. He cataloged many of the manuscript libraries of the colleges at the University of Cambridge and published several significant scholarly works. This copy with the bookplate of Harold S. Horan on the front free-endpaper and his inkstamp to the rear free-endpaper. 8vo. Blue cloth, grey printed dustjacket. 7 x 4 3/4 in. xxxi, [xxxii], 594, [2] pp. Very good; dustjacket spine panel sunned with loss at head. Seller Inventory # 7503
