About this Item
A robust antique Thai manuscript case constructed of tropical hardwood (possibly teak). The case consists of a framed structure on an extended base, with six recessed panels, two on each long side and one on each end. A removable lid sits flush within the top section of the frame, and a small leather thong on the lid facilitates its lifting and removal. All side surfaces are lavishly decorated in the lai rot nam technique, employed widely in temple wall and door decoration in the Rattanakosin Period, from which this case dates. The technique involves the overlay of gold leaf to create decorative elements onto a black lacquer background. All six panels depict seated figures of deities, hands in anjali mudra, surrounded by dense designs of stylized rocks, floral elements and foliage. The interior of the case is covered with plain red lacquer; the lid with a transparent lacquer and the underside of the base remains untreated. A very similar case, although longer and narrower, with three, rather than the present two, side panels, may be seen in Gallery 213 of the Minneapolis Museum of Art. The case dates to the mid to late 19th century and would typically have been used to house and protect a Buddhist manuscript on lontar palm. There are minor chips and some surface wear commensurate with its age and use; overall the case is in very good, sound condition. The case dimensions are 51 cm. x 26 cm. x 26.5 cm. high. Size: 51 cm. x 26 cm. x 26.5 cm. Seller Inventory # 002064
