Add to basketedited by Cecilia Muratori. Fabrizio Serra, 2013, pp. 244 -- This volume intends to show the richness of the Renaissance debates on the distinction between man and the animals by moving a first step towards a more detailed reconstruction of the topic. It employs a dual approach: on the one hand the chapters focus on the soul of animals in selected authors, discussing its faculties, and its main points of distinction from the human soul, or mind; on the other there are main threads that run through the whole collection, and that come especially to light in the texts printed in the appendices. The decision to include extracts from primary sources is motivated by the attempt to identify key aspects of the Renaissance debates on the soul of animals by selecting a series of texts to form an 'essential reading list', as well as a base to encourage readers of the volume to pursue their own further investigations. The chapters, written in Italian, English and German, thus also find a point of convergence in the primary texts selected exclusively in their original languages. The feature of multilingual contributions, with the addition of the texts, is therefore intended to place the volume in an international context of current research, encouraging terminological as well as conceptual analysis, and consideration of how the primary texts under examination are received, commented, translated in these languages. The texts and the authors presented certainly don't exhaust the panorama of the Renaissance debates on the animal soul in relation to the human mind: indeed, they form only a small portion of the material available. But the approach this volume takes to them is intended to open up new space for reconstructing this topic in further detail, starting with in-depth study of the sources, and of their relations to one another.
