About this Item
Lewis Carroll is the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832¿1898), an English writer, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. Alice in Wonderland (1865) is his most remembered work. Alice's adventures are a case study of logic in an illogical world. Alice and the characters she met have become childhood classics through books and movies still being printed and filmed in the 21st century. In the middle of WWI, 1916, the English publisher Ward, Lock and Company, Limited released a new edition of this classic by featuring the whimsical illustrations of Margaret W. Tarrant. This copy was printed in 1916 (according to title page) by Ward, Lock & Co. in Great Britain for the American publisher, Platt & Peck. Although the Tarrant edition was widely popular, those 1st Tarrant editions (1916 on title page) are rare. Those printed for other publishers in 1916 are scarcer still. This is a true 1st American Tarrant Edition. Margaret Winifred Tarrant (1888¿1959) was an English illustrator, and children's author, specializing in depictions of fairy-like children and religious subjects. She began her career at the age of 20, and painted and published into the early 1950s. In the 1920s, Tarrant helped to popularize fairies in a long-running series of titles on the theme such as The Forest Fairies, The Pond Fairies, and The Twilight Fairies. She 1s remembered for her children's books, postcards, calendars, and print reproductions. Hardcover has green cloth boards, gilt lettering plus blind-stamped rules to spine & front plus full-color pictorial on-lay on front cover, but no DJ. Tears in stop of spine with cloth worn through at points of cover. There are 44 color plate including the frontis, full-color end-papers, xvi, 332 pp. The 48 plates of art touted on the front cover include the end-papers. Interior seems complete although binding is loose. Both gutters torn. Pages have smudges from fingerprints and age spots, but no writing/coloring marks found. Always privately owned, ex-libris sticker (also dated 1916) pasted onto front end-pages. This copy has no mention of copyrights, rights reserved etc. Edition and printing not specifically stated but deduced from information cited above. Of course, no ISBN, LCCN nor MSR are given.
