As a year old, he immigrated with his family to the Connecticut Western Reserve. He became a lawyer and a member of the Free-Soil Party, and became a member of the emergent Republican Party. He moved with his family to Cleveland in 1850, later to Washington where he was active in Congress especially supporting a bill to abolish slavery in the District of Columbia. This, a remarkable copy with lightest wear to binding edges. Decorative brown cloth with gilt illustration of the Capital Dome on the front cover & spine.
