Square 8vo (8 x 6 ), pp. 31 (of 32), A8, B8, C8, D1-D2, [D3 lacking], D4-D8. Woodcut title, woodcut initial letter, woodcut illustrations. The Latin metrical version of the Anonymous Neveleti, known as Aesopus Moralisatus, with Latin commentary and Italian interlinear translation. Late 17th century variegated mottled sheep. Gilt triple fillet borders & gilt corner ornaments on both sides. Smooth back in six double gilt filleted panels, gilt titled red leather lettering piece in the second, the rest with gilt floral center ornaments & gilt rosette corner ornaments. Gilt roll tooled board edges. All edges red. Marbled endpapers. Good copy in an attractive old binding with loss at the head-cap & lower ¾ of back-strip but clean leather, sound strong boards, & bright gilt. Sheets with some soil & stains. Lacks the leaf D3 [fab 60, de iudeo, & pincerna]. WorldCat locates only one copy---Princeton University Library---which is Imperfect, losses from upper margin of first two leaves affecting the decorative border of the title & commentary & translation on the nest three pages; water-stained, gatherings loose, spine defective, some staining, covers damped .They note: Rare Latin-Italian edition of Aesop s Fables prepared for children, illustrated with a series of 66 naïve and charming woodcuts based on the Brescia 1537 edition…accompanied by Latin comments for young readers as well as an Italian interlinear translation to help them along.
