Publisher: Printed for the Company of Stationers, London

Publication Date: 1641

Binding: Hard Cover

"Eight time newly imprinted." 3 Volumes. Pp. irregular pagination, though text and register continuous - [128], 756, 767 to 1033; [42], 22, [1], 6-113, 112-788, [14]-106, (i.e. 108); 584, then 595-1030, [94]. Each volumes contains an illustrated title-page, half-title 'Booke of martyrs' in vol. 1 as called for.; Vol. II contains "A continuation of the histories of forreine martyrs: from the happy reign of the most renowned Queene Elizabeth, to these times," with separate illustrated title-page and the imprint "printed by Ric. Hearn, for the Company of Stationers."; Vol. III contains the Index or "A Table of all the principall Persons and things contained in the three Volumes, and the Continuation of the last Edition of the Booke of Martyrs, set forth 1632. Made by N. Holmes D. in D. and in this second Edition 1641., corrected and enlarged by the Authour." With over 150 woodcuts, a text map, large folding plate, and 4 full-page plates (lacks the frontispiece portrait). Expertly rebound in sympathetic period binding of quarter leather and marbled boards, 5 raised bands, gilt-stamped spine with gilt-stamped black spine labels, marbled endpapers. Repairs to folding plate and one other, a couple of minor paper repairs, minor smudges and stains throughout, with an inked 1759 signature, a couple of damp stains in the margin, not affecting the text, a clean strip from bottom white space of one leaf in volume 1 clipped. Otherwise, a very good copy of a handsomely rebound set of fascinating material, and gory woodcuts. According to a little newspaper snippet pasted to the front free endpaper of volume 1, this, the 1841 edition was the same as John Bunyan had in his possession during his famous imprisonment in the old county jail of Bedford. Size: Quarto. Bookseller Inventory # 18154
