[24]pp. Small octavo. Disbound, with remnants of previous binding. Contemporary ownership inscription on titlepage. Slight foxing and occasional brown stains, small wormhole to bottom blank margin of the sixth through tenth leaves; overall quite clean. Very good. Although Evans attributes this almanac to Benjamin West of Providence, the Hartford Bickerstaffs from 1785 and on are now usually credited to Rev. Nehemiah Strong, Yale's first professor of Mathematics and Natural Science. Strong, fed up with rumors attributing Bickerstaff almanacs to himself and dismissive of their quality, seems to have decided to simply take the name for his own in Hartford. Rather than verse, each month's calendar in this almanac is preceded instead by a brief historical note describing how that month was introduced and where each got its name, along with thoughts on how suitable a time it is for a marriage. Contains also two longer stories, "The Parson and his horned Horse" and "An old woman basted with Butter". The titlepage bears the contemporary ownership inscription of one Solomon Noble, son of Revolutionary War veteran and Willington Connecticut preacher Rev. Gideon Noble. ESTC W25546. EVANS 20874.
