William Maxwell Evarts (1818-1901) served as President Andrew Johnson's Chief Counsel during the impreachment trials and later served (1868-9) as the US Attorney General. From 1877-1881 he was Secretary of State. A very accomplished person he later raised the monies for the base of the Statue of Liberty. He is buried about 40 minutes from our shop where his family resided. Volume I: 722pp, ads; Volume II: 647pp; and, Volume III: 461pp. Set from family's estate, and inscribed (all three volumes) "John Evarts from Aunt Mary - Sept. 16, 1925" good, blue cloth, teg (hardcover) light edgewear to cloth.
