Sm 8vo. xxiv, 144, (2); (2), 208 pp. Second Edition, first published 1794. Full contemporary tree calf. Spine compartments marked in gilt. Black leather labels at heads of spines marked 'SPARE NOUGHT' with goats heads in gilt. ("Spare nought" was the motto and battle cry of the Hays, ancestors of the Marquesses of Tweeddale). Volume 1 has a red leather title label below but volume 2's label is lacking. Both vols have central circular vol number labels. Joints and spines with very slight surface rubbing. Edges of endpapers, initial and final leaves slightly tanned. Text clean. Paper with a pale green tint. The author's first and most famous novel. She fled to England from the French Revolution where her husband was guillotined. A handsome very good set. Seller Inventory # 7031
