About the Book

Bibliographic Details

Title: THE ABBOT (In Two Volumes Complete)

Publisher: Boston: Samuel H. Parker, 1831, Boston

Publication Date: 1831

Binding: Publisher's Brown Cloth

Illustrator: Illustrated with Frontispiece Engravings

Book Condition: Good

Edition: First American Edition (Waverley Novels)

First American printing of this Sir Walter Scott title as part of the revised, corrected set of the Waverley Novels. The British version of the set was issued in Edinburgh a year previous to when these American printings appeared. Each of the two volumes with a frontispiece illustration. They are volumes 19 and 20 from the set, with original publisher's paper labels on the spines. In original publisher's cloth, with some expected deterioration from the years but each book still tight in the binding. Remarkable surivivors since these bindings were meant to be only temporary until the books could be rebound in leather. Chipping of the cloth at the edges, especially head and foot of spine, and along the joints. Vertical split on spine of first volume and second volume has a similar split starting, but the split does not interefere with the basic serviceability of the binding as the strings are still sound. The title pages read "Waverley Novels. The Abbot; Being The Sequel Of The Monastery. In Two Volumes. Parker's Edition, Revised and Corrected, With A General Preface, An Introduction To Each Novel, And Notes, Historical And Ilustrative, By THE AUTHOR. Boston, (publisher's name and address), 1831." An examination of the NUC listings for Waverly novels titles indicates no earlier printings of these titles in the format of the revised and corrected edition. Internally the volumes are mostly clean, with age spotting (foxing) heaviest on the endpapers and then becoming lighter and more sporadic. Frontispiece illustrations tissue protected. (Note: Other Samuel H. Parker first American edition titles in this Waverley series are available in the same original bindings as these.) Size: Octavo, 260, 264pp. Bookseller Inventory # 1936
