In 1814 Malta passed under British sovereignty, and in the following year the Ionian Islands were placed under British protection. To commemorate these two events a new order of knighthood was created and dedicated to St Michael and St George. The Order of St Michael and St George was originally intended for Maltese and Ionian citizens, and its motto, Auspicium Melioris Aevi ("A pledge of better times") was to prove prophetic for Malta which was to remain British for 150 years. This is the story of the Order from its inception, through the first fifty years of its Maltese life, and up to 1960 when the last appointment of a Maltese subject was made. The story encapsulates much of Malta's history under British rule and includes portrayals of the early Governors of Malta and of the Maltese members of the Order. Part Two of the book gives a detailed account of Maltese knights of other British orders of chivalry and of Maltese Knights Bachelor. Also listed are the Maltese Companions of the Orders of the Bath and of the Indian Empire and the Commanders of the Royal Victorian Order and of the Order of the British Empire, as well as Knights of Justice and Grace of the Venerable Order of St John of Jerusalem. ● The author, Major Albert Edward Abela, MBE, (1932-2007) was an Associate of the Royal Historical Society and a Member of the Orders and Medals Research Society. He is the author of the following books: Grace and glory: Malta: people, places & events: historical sketches · Governors of Malta · A nation's praise: Malta: people, places & events: historical sketches · Malta's George Cross and war gallantry awards · Guide to the National Library of Malta.
