Mamoru Shinozaki was born in Japan in February 1908. After graduating from Meiji University in 1932, he worked as a journalist with the Domei News Agency in Shanghai, Nanjing and Hankow. He later joined the Japanese Foreign Ministry and was sent in 1936 as a press attaché in Berlin before being posted to Singapore in October 1938. In Singapore, the British convicted and jailed him as a Japanese spy prior to World War II. During the Japanese Occupation, he risked his life and saved thousands of Chinese and Eurasians from being arrested and detained by the military police, or Kempeitai, through his liberal issue of personal safety passes and the creation of safe havens. After the War during the Singapore War Crimes Trial between 1946 48 for the Sook Ching Massacre, he was a key witness for the prosecution. Mr Shinozaki passed away in the early 1990s.
