It is considered one of the most prominent figures in Haitian literature . Although little known in the English speaking world , Roumain has followers in Europe , and is recognized in the Caribbean and Latin America. The great African-American poet , Langston Hughes, translated some of the best works of Roumain , Gouverneurs including the Rosée ( Masters of the Dew ) . Although his life was short , Roumain managed to touch many aspects of life and culture haitiana.Roumain born on June 4, 1907 , in Port -au -Prince to wealthy parents . His grandfather, Auguste Tancred , he served as President of Haiti from 1912 to 1913. He was educated at Catholic schools in Port -au -Prince , and later , in Belgium , Switzerland , France , Germany and Spain . At twenty years old , he returned to Haiti and formed La Revue Indigene : Les Arts et La Vie ( The Indian Journal: Art and Life ) , along with Philippe Thoby - Marcelin , Carl Brouard and Vieux Antonio. He was active in the struggle against the US occupation of Haiti. In 1934 he founded the Haitian Communist Party. Because some of his political activities , participation in the resistance movement against US occupation " , and above all, his creation of the Haitian Communist Party , was arrested and exiled often , finally , by then President Vicente Stênio . during his years in exile, worked Roumain and friend of many pan-African prominent writers and poets of the time, like Langston Hughes. was during this time he was also affiliated with Columbia University in New York , where he conducted ethnographic research. with the change of government in Haiti , Roumain was allowed to return to his native country. Upon his return, he founded the Bureau of Ethnology. in 1943 , President Elie Lescot appointed him charge d'affaires in Mexico , where his newfound freedom creative allowed
