Created between 1928 and 1983, the engravings reveal Miro conquering this most unforgiving of mediums - in which there are no second chances - in order to produce works of transcendent power and beauty. Working primarily in Paris and Barcelona, Miro used engraving as a means of both self-expression and collaboration, particularly with poets. His great love of poetry is evident in more than 100 frontispieces and illustrations that adorn collections of verse by the renowned and the unknown alike. Miro created a veritable "mirror book" for Andre Frenaud's Le Miroir de l'homme par les betes where text and engraved illustrations are situated on facing pages. In Fissure, published in 1969, Miro's illustrations emerge as the dark counterpoint to forty bitter, existential poems by the esteemed French novelist, Michel Leiris. These illustrations and hundreds more terstify to Miro's deep understandiing of the combined power of poetry and art and to his phenomenal talent as an engraver.
