About The Author: Lieutenant Colonel Laurence Austine Waddell (1854-1938) was a Scottish explorer, Indian Army surgeon, and amateur archaeologist. He studied Tibetan, Sumerian, and Sanskrit and made translations of inscriptions. Despite limited academic recognition, some consider him a real-life Indiana Jones precursor. He collected bird specimens, leading to the naming of a species after him. His collections are in museums, including the Hunterian Museum and Natural History Museum. The University of Glasgow holds his papers. Waddell authored books on topics like Tibetan Buddhism, the Brahmaputra tribes, and Phoenician origins of Britons and Anglo-Saxons.
