An anthology of more than 200 drawings, watercolors, pastels, and gouaches by almost as many modern and contemporary artists from Matisse, Klimt, and Schiele to Paul Klee, Jim Dine, and Man Ray. The works appeared in an exhibit at the Salzburg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. In his introduction, Weiermair (director of the museum), discusses various approaches to figural representation as well as artists' erotic fascination with the body. Presents a survey of the image of the human body in 20th century art, featuring drawings, gouaches, pastels and watercolours by 200 artists. The book reveals the various distinctive representations of the body in drawings and documents the erotic fascination with which artists have viewed their subject, evident in the works of Klimt, Rodin and Matisse. Successive phases, from post-impressionism to the contemporary scene, reflect the evolutionary process that has changed the body's image in art throughout the 20th century. Among the artists included are Cocteau, Degas, Giacometti, Hockney, Picasso and Schiele.
