Known as a master of colour, Emil Nolde used many different types of media besides painting, including watercolor, drawing, and prints, to create works such as his numerous flower paintings and coastal landscapes. The book explores Nolde's expressionist painting technique and reexamines Nolde's motives as an artist, by looking at how his works were received and how this was shaped by the artist's image of himself. As well as featuring Nolde's lesser studied early and late paintings and previously unpublished works this volume also presents the latest research on Nolde's work and his relationship to National Socialism. The book accompanies an extensive retrospective exhibition on Nolde's work.
