Synopsis

This set offers the volumes Metaphysical Initial Reasons of Law and Metaphysical Initial Grounds of the Virtue Doctrine of Immanuel Kant, which the Königsberg philosopher published in 1797 on law or virtue doctrine as a »metaphysics of morals«. The metaphysical initial reasons of law make an important contribution to modern law and state philosophy, because Kant develops in this volume an experience-independent (metaphysical) theory regarding the normative principles of law and state. It begins with an innate and inalienable human right, and then proceeds to the institutions of property and the rule of law. Although the doctrine of virtue remained largely unnoticed during its publication, its revolutionary new concept of virtue (the idea of duties against others and against oneself, an examination of "love duties" as well as with respect and dignity) has been unfolding for some time an increasing effect in research.
