Review:
"Useful for students are the Focus sections; they delve into the mathematics and detailed physics of the chapter, leaving the rest of the material free of mathematics so it can be read by almost anyone. Ý...¨ Well written, up-to-date, and very comprehensive. Strongly recommended. General readers; undergraduates through faculty." (CHOICE, 38/7, 2001)

"The book is dedicated to the "curious, imaginative and intelligent" reader and for them and anyone else wanting to get rapidly "up to speed" on experimental solar physics this text can be thoroughly recommended. (...) The Sun from Space is notable for a number of special features. There is a bibliography par excellence covering some 60 pages. So as not to disrupt the flow of the text, details of background or supporting topics are dealt within "Focus Boxes" which work well. For me, however, the crowning special feature is the chronology of significant events in the field given at the end of each section." (The Observatory, 2001)
The book is quite well-written and is organized to make the material accessible and useful to readers with a range of backgrounds Clearly, Lang is knowledgeable and has done his homework Improving our understanding of the Suns effects on weather and climate will help us separate out anthropogenic effects and, thus, enable rational decision making. In this context, Lang provides an important book I can recommend THE SUN FROM SPACE to anyone interested in a coherent and accurate account of recent advances in our understanding of the Sun and the many ways in which it affects our lives. (SCIENCE MAGAZINE, April 27. 2001)

"The Sun from Space is anexcellent resource for the classroom. The treatment of so many topics so well also makes the book a handy reference - and source of renewed inspiration - for those researching, or just interested in, the physics of the Sun and its impact on the Earth." From the Back Cover:

This volume is a comprehensive, up-to-date account of solar astrophysics and how our perception and knowledge of this star have evolved as mankind has elucidated ever more of its mysteries. The emphasis of this second edition of The Sun from Space is on the last decade, which includes the findings of the SOHO, Ulysses, and Yohkoh solar spacecraft missions over an entire 11-year cycle of solar activity, the results of the RHESSI solar spacecraft launched during this interval, the early findings of the recently launched Hinode and STEREO solar spacecraft, and the ACE and Wind spacecraft that extend our investigations of the Sun to its varying input to Earth over the past ten years.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The First Edition of The Sun from Space, completed in 1999, focused on the early accomplishments of three solar spacecraft, SOHO, Ulysses, and Yohkoh, primarily during a minimum in the Sun's 11-year cycle of magnetic activity. The comp- hensive Second Edition includes the main ndings of these three spacecraft over an entire activity cycle, including two minima and a maximum, and discusses the signi cant results of six more solar missions. Four of these, the Hinode, RHESSI, STEREO, and TRACE missions were launched after the First Edition was either nished or nearly so, and the other two, the ACE and Wind spacecraft, extend our investigations from the Sun to its varying input to the Earth. The Second Edition does not contain simple updates or cosmetic patch ups to the material in the First Edition. It instead contains the relevant discoveries of the past decade, integrated into chapters completely rewritten for the purpose. This provides a fresh perspective to the major topics of solar enquiry, written in an enjoyable, easily understood text accessible to all readers, from the interested layperson to the student or professional. 592 pp. Englisch.
