The functions of linguistic structures and expressions reflect knowledge patterns stored in diverse parts of memory. Based on the assumption that language cannot be adequately understood without considering properties of memory, the volume brings together fourteen contributions by distinguished linguists and psychologists. As is evident in linguistic structure as well as in language use, multiple strong relations exist between the core areas of language on the one hand and memory on the other. The volume clearly shows that this new dimension of linguistic analysis has high explanatory potential beyond the field of pragmatics.

"The book should be stimulating for researchers and students of linguistic core areas as well as those occupied with developmental aspects and theoretical aspects of language. It also provides new insights into methods of analysis both in linguistics and in cognitve pschology."www.kultur-insel.de 11/2006
